Woke on the Wrong Side

"Free yourself from the complexities and drama of your life. Simplify. Look within. Within ourselves we all have the gifts and talents we need to fulfill the purpose we've been blessed with." - Steve Maraboli

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

Felt tired and drained (the type you mentally feel when you've given out a piece of yourself or chased down an idea in an attempt to grasp and pull it into physical existence). So yea, I woke up tired, drained and even worse - unsatisfied. And here's why. A day before, I had helped a close friend produce a short film. It was a good experience, met new people, talked and laughed. And at the end of the day, we were glad that the initial complications we encountered met with man's ability to adapt.

As a creative,

there's something about seeing another person's creation that sparks a hunger to match it and create yours. Hence the reason I woke up with the feeling of discomfort and unease, which brings me to an underlying issue a lot of us face.

Tension and anxiety - these are considered negative emotions that everyone at some point struggles with. They have also been the focal point through which a lot of books on how to handle them are already published, and gone on to be bestsellers. I have come to realize that there is a positive side to it.

To quote a priest in Daredevil a Marvel/Netflix collaboration,

"Guilt is the soul's call to action".

While this isn't necessarily guilt, I see it as one of the cues through which the body alerts us about something that is missing or not as it should be.

This longing can be associated with a word - Purpose.

While everyone may not believe in fancy and aggrandized words like destiny or fate, we can all agree everyone has a role to play. And if you are sensitive and aware enough to pay attention, you would realize and know when you are not playing a said role or are lost on what exactly that role is. Which is okay, because part of being human and living is finding what role you play or serve for different times in different lives which we interact with.

While we may hate the anxiety that comes from time to time.

And plagues even the most optimistic and merriest of minds, we should use it as an internal signal to pause, breathe and reassess our lives, position and decisions at that specific point in our lives. Because while our destination or end goal (to those who have discovered what they were made or meant to do) may be known or seem solid, the current version of who we are will at different stages need to evolve to attain our envisioned selves. Although this discomfort sometimes comes about when our envisioned selves and our current self do not align, this would help nudge us back on track.

Finally,

Purpose is the truest form of freedom man has. Because while we may from time to time, feel exhausted or complain about wanting to have the freedom to live free and relaxed, the truth is that without a challenge to overcome, we feel empty and worthless in the long run at having nothing to look back on as our impact or achievement.

The secret, like everything else in life -

is to live in moderation and find balance. Never let the discomfort or anxiety overwhelm you, and don't put too much pressure on yourself. Also, to those who may be reading this and thinking, 'what is my purpose?' It's alright, that is why we are on earth, nobody was put here by mistake. And that's alright. Not everyone can have a dream or achievement like the cure for cancer, world peace or anything that grand. Some are just here to give hope to that neighbour, make that stranger smile, even be an employee at that facility that might help the owner get enough resources or reputation to build a franchise and employ many more individuals.

The summary is this -

live well, so that in living, you leave the world better than you found it.
